Best Online Payroll Software for Small Businesses in Canada

Payroll wasn’t always this easy.

Back in 2010, and for decades before this, payroll was a tedious process. A bookkeeper would receive the hours from the employer. From there, they had to take all the time sheets, figure out how much time each employee worked, figure out if they get overtime, figure out vacation pay, and figure out statutory holiday pay, often by using large hour tracking spread sheets. Then, once they did all the work, the numbers were then punched into the accounting software, QuickBooks, Sage, or the like, and it produced a pay slip for. So, after the bookkeeper did all the work, the ‘Payroll Software’ then took all the credit.

Looking at all this, we didn’t ask if payroll processing could be simplified; we asked if it could be eliminated.

Given the software landscape at the time, software was progressing to live online, and so too should ours. Being one of the first to be built from the ground up to be access by any device from anywhere gave us a huge advantage over other software that remained as desktop installation or being retro-fitted to reside online, which never really works properly. After years of development, the software stated taking shape. The rules overtime, vacation pay, statutory holiday pay and federal payroll deductions were painstakingly entered one by one, and province by province.

Reports were added such as for payroll deductions and year to date. Of course, T4 and Record of Employment (ROE) were needed as well. The last piece though was how to enter in the information when it comes time to do payroll? How can it be so simple that anyone can do it and so fast that it only takes seconds to do? The answer was to use a scheduler to get the job done. Most businesses keep a schedule anyhow so why not intergrade it with the software?

With that last piece in place, PayrollConnected was released to the world in 2013, and since then, we’ve eliminated payroll processing for clients Canada over; coast to coast. Today we’re still developing the software, still adding features, and still Canada’s only fully automatic payroll processing software.
